Family Weekend

The Gambier House in Gambier OhioWhether entering through the cast iron fence to the front door or by way of the trellised back courtyard, guests cannot help but be enveloped by the special warmth of this 1845 home built by one of Kenyon College’s master carpenters.

Ideally located just across Wiggin Street from the main campus of Kenyon College, The Gambier House has been lovingly restored and decorated. It features a formal parlor, family room, fireplaces, antiques, hidden staircases as well as five bedrooms and an attached suite. Enjoy the tranquility of the weeping cherry courtyard or watch the world go by on a front porch rocker.

The gracefully elegant mixture of Victorian and Country charm is an invitation to relax, take a deep breath and enjoy all that surrounds you.

No matter the season or the reason, The Gambier House is a welcome retreat and center of operations for all your Knox County or Kenyon College needs.

The Gambier House has central air and heat and is a non-smoking bed and breakfast.

Spring 2008

GREETINGS and welcome to the Gambier House website. By now we are free of the early March mountain of snow (18 inches here on the Hill) and a Gambier Spring is in full force: snow flurries followed by balmy temperatures and torrential rains. The spring buds don’t know which way to turn.

Soon enough Nature will be in full flower here in Gambier. Between the residents and the Kenyon College gardeners, the Hill is breathtaking in the spring. Lots of wildlife is waking up: seen in the past few days -- bluebirds, cardinals, titmouse, robins, red tail hawks and pileated woodpeckers, deer, opossums, groundhogs and skunks. You never know what you will find on campus or along the Kokosing Gap Trail.

Rooms still are available in the House in April, May and June. Please remember that only two-night weekend bookings are honored in April. Graduation and Reunion are sold out, but you can always contact us about the wait list just in case.

For those looking beyond the Kenyon school year, there is plenty of availability this summer. We will be the site of a few Kenyon writers at the end of June as well as a destination for the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure. There is much to do on the Hill in the summer months -- barbershop quartets, author readings, 4th of July parades. Among the many excursions within a short drive of The Gambier House are Amish Country, dogwood trails, and Mohican State Park.

Gambier also boasts the first dog park in Knox County. While we can’t have any sleepover animals, we know a kennel or two and the 1.5 acre dog park is a very popular canine destination.

Look for The Gambier House in TWO upcoming publications! A couple of favorite House recipes have been included in a Gambier Village cookbook to be released this summer and the bed and breakfast will be featured in Particular Places, A Traveler's Guide to Ohio's Best Road Trips also to be published this summer.

So consider a trip to the country and sit a spell on our front porch, enjoy a delicious breakfast (local produce season is just around the corner) and take part in all the wonder that is Gambier in the warmer months.

With all best wishes,

EJ Heer
Innkeeper
